Current Events and Issues

Keep checking back, we will be listing any items of interest such as details of our Open Meetings, our AGM and Special Events etc.

  • Proposed Bridleway has been abandoned because of our objections

As reported at the AGM on 5 July, it is intended to re-consult on shared use of the path for pedestrian and cyclists. While there is no LBS funding available this year, 'Sustrans' (a sustainable charity) does have funding from 'Transport for London'. Consultation is expected. LBS still prefers to have the path un-segregated (as it is now in the widened path) If you know of any incidents between cyclists and pedestrians, please let the Secretary have details.

  • Pavilion Replacement

The Expected timetable for progressing decision making advised to FoSCP was

  • Final advice from Insurance Services.
  • Late Autumn 2010Consultation with Friends, councillors, user groups on desired outcomes Dec/Feb 2011
  • Report to Local committee with outline options and views March/April 2011
  • Report for decision by the Executive with options and views of Local
  • Committee April/May 2011
  • Implementation of decision Summer 2011

During recent months The Friends including its representatives have made real efforts to process our objective of restoring a Pavilion. The following report will be considered at our next meeting and there will be a good opportunity to debate the position at the AGM on 5 July (see below)

'The North Cheam and Worcester Park Committee has recommended to Executive Committee the idea of using up to £277k from the insurance money for the old pavilion to rebuild a new facility in Sutton Common Park. It was noted that this would not be sufficient to build a full pavilion to FA standards, with changing rooms, a meeting space, toilets and showers. However it may be possible to build a more limited pavilion and prices will be sought from contractors to see what is possible.

It was also decided to seek a sports partner such as a football club which might be able to fund raise to build a larger building. Any partner organisation would be offered a lease on the building in return. This gives the exciting opportunity for a club to have Sutton Common as their home ground and really develop the building to suit their needs.

It was agreed that any new pavilion should be built adjacent to the bowling green which is a more secure and visible location and also closer to the car park.

A copy of the report has been forwarded to the Sutton Guardian with the following comment

"We are delighted with the outcome to rebuild a new facility in Sutton Common Park and to re-use the insurance money for the purpose intended. A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes with our Local Ward Councillors and Officer support to reach this decision and we feel we have jumped over a major hurdle to get this far. There are more hurdles to jump over, probably more than the Olympics, before we get there but with the vision of the council to actively help young people in pursuing sport we believe this will be in the long-term interest for our local community."

A final decision by the LBS Executive on whether the funds can be released to build our new Pavilion is expected in late September. (Information at AGM)

  • Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 5th July

The meeting was well attended (despite the rain), including The Mayor and Mayoress of London Borough of Sutton, Cllr. Adrian Davey( Stonecot Ward Councillor), Mark Dalzell (LBS Head of Parks), and PS Jessica Timms (Stonecot Safer Neighbourhoods Team).

Our thanks to the SC Bowls Club for the use of their clubhouse for the meeting - we understand new members will be welcome.
